Thursday 3/17/22: First Fit!
It seemed as good a day as any to start something that I have been meaning to do for a long time. I have always had a desire to find an outlet to share a little bit about my passion for mens fashion and the importance of appearance. There is something to be said about first impressions and the impact that looking “put together”, for lack of better terms, can have on both self perception and outward expression.
If blogs like this bore the shit out of you, I totally get it. It’s not for everyone. Yet, if you stick around, I hope these posts provide you with outfit inspiration, brand discovery, and a space to talk about the clothing and accessories I have come to love. So, without further ado, I will attempt to dive into this debut fit perfect for an overcast Spring day here in Portland, Oregon.
Portland has been sitting in the mid 40s to 50s which is right in the sweet spot when it comes to wearing my favorite pieces. Cold enough for a light jacket, yet warm enough to keep layers to a minimum.
Below
Most days, I will begin crafting an outfit by selecting my pair of pants for the day. You will soon see that I favor selvage denim and ride that slant pretty hard. The way denim ages and continues to build character over time is an addiction that my girlfriend and close friends have heard far too much about (hence the fact that I am now talking to internet about it instead). These Naked and Famous True Grit Selvage jeans have been in my rotation as of late, partly because I love the “gritty” texture and partly because they come in at a perfect weight of 15oz. For you denimheads out there, these are about eight months old with one soak and three washes. I normally wash my jeans far less often, yet the True Grits have proved to crock (bleed indigo) on literally everything, and still are after three washes (which is insane). I am really enjoying the way these fade into a vintage, vibrant blue while having natural brown tones poking through due to the tan weft.
Up Top
Up top, I chose to layer two lighter pieces together that proved to be perfect for an overcast day with a little rain. I have been poking around the city for new menswear shops and stopped into Ship John the other day. It is an absolutely rad shop through and through with kind folks who care about quality garments. I highly recommend checking them out. While visiting, I decided to pick up one of their Charcoal Levon Thermals and I have to say it is the softest thermal I have owned, and lighter weight than I am used to, making it a versatile staple in my wardrobe. And, for $32, you can’t beat it.
Over the top I have a Far Afield Porter Jacket, one of my oldest and most loved jackets. Brand new, it was a deep almost forest green, yet after about 5 years of pretty regular wear, it has dulled down to a color more reminiscent of an army green which I am a huge fan of. I had always felt weary about the integrity of corduroy as a durable fabric, yet this thing has been beat to hell with no holes and minimal wear on the elbows and collar.
Shoes
When it comes to footwear, I seem to gravitate more towards classic sneaker silhouettes from Vans and Converse, so I chose to keep this fit casual with these Chuck 70’s featuring cool ripstop reinforcements around areas that usually endure the most stress on the shoe. Having blown out numerous pairs of Converse throughout my life, I am curious to see if this will prevent the wear I normally see around the outside of the foot and ankle from skating and walking around the city.
This ironically proved to be a perfect fit for my St. Pattys Day happy hour with the pops of green. Honestly a bit of dumb luck. Anyhow, glad you stopped by. See you soon.
